Birthday Celebrations

We enjoy celebrating your child's birthday. Please understand that we cannot have any snacks for our celebrations because of allergies. In lieu of food, please bring in your child's favorite book. After the children enjoy their snacks and sing Happy Birthday to your child, we will join together on our rainbow rug where we will listen to you read the book to the whole class. Additionally, please understand that we do not have the birthday person bring in treats for each child.

Please contact me in advance of your child's birthday and we can work out a day and time that will be convenient for you.

Homework:

The purpose of homework in first grade is to review and practice skills taught in the classroom. Children will not need to spend a great deal of time at home completing these assignments.

Trick Words: Each week your child will bring home four trick words printed on oak tag paper. These trick words are taken from our Fundations phonics program. The goal is for your child to recognize, read and spell the words correctly. We will practice these words in school as well. The words become more challenging as the year progresses and by June there will be over 100 words. Your child will need to know how to read and spell these words for second grade. Reading and spelling these trick words should eventually become automatic for the students. The key is to practice, practice, and practice!

Reading and trick word practice: A reading log and sight word practice worksheet will be sent home on Mondays and both are due on Friday. Please read to or have your child read to you 10 to 15 minutes each day.

After school plans:

If your child has any different after school plans, please send in a note for that day with the details.
